The exhibition which will launch in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games explores the parallels between Roman London and the today’s modern capital. It is the largest update to the Museum’s Roman gallery since it opened in 1994.

Gibbs was appointed by exhibition curators, the Museum of London’s youth panel, Junction, to create a series of four illustrations of modern and Roman objects in his ‘doodle’ style.   Gibbs says, “This is a great development of my work and has the iconic look of my trademark illustrations.”

Londoners get personal with the Olympics

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

London College of Communication (LCC) alumnus Lorenzo Belenguer is the mastermind behind TESTIMONIES – a Cultural Olympiad and Inspire Mark project created to explore Londoners’ stories before the Olympics in 1948 and today.

The first part of the project, which forms part of the Cultural Olympiad is a sound installation based on recorded interviews with London residents, young and old, and it is currently on show at the Willesden Green Centre until 30 June.

Now the project is seeking contributions from across the social media spectrum and these tweets and Facebook stories will be broadcast in venues across London over the summer. This makes TESTIMONIES one of the first art projects to put social media at its core.

Tasteless signage leads to dream job for MA Graphic Design graduate Siaron Hughes

Friday, August 20th, 2010

It’s been a year since we first featured Siaron Hughes and her book Chicken: Low Art, High Calorie here on the Head of College blog. Rather than going tepid and cold, the book continues to ruffle feathers and has recently been featured on the BBC America webpage Anglophenia.

A year on and Siaron has landed her dream job working for graphic design company Objectif and has fittingly been charged with the task of sprucing up the capital’s high streets ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

Poster Map by Objectif

Siaron explains: “Highstreet 2012 involves coming up with typography ideas for shop fascias as well as a series of screen-printed posters highlighting regeneration work that will be happening in the parks along the route to the Olympics, from Aldgate, Whitechapel, Stepney Green and Mile End. Producing the posters, in particular, is an exciting project to be part of as The London Development Agency and Design for London were keen for them to be screen-printed to give them a more craft-based community feel.”

Whitechapel Facades by Objectif

“Various shop fronts along the route are being restored to their original features, and so the signage will be hand painted to reflect this and will have a more exciting contemporary colour palette. This has been made possible by my chicken book and the fascia documentation that I’d made of East London.”

Olympic Spirit from Nexus Productions on Vimeo.

Elin Svensson, a graduate from BA GMD – Design for Illustration, has been working with Nexus director Johnny Kelly to produce his new film Olympic Spirit. The film, made for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), uses paper and stop frame animation – a technique that Elin began experimenting with while at LCC. The film was reviewed recently by Creative Review.

Since then Elin has joined forces with fellow LCC graduate Joanna Lundberg to form the studio ‘Åh’ and they have just finished their own first paper collage animation.

These photos are from a visit by FdA Interior Design students to the 2012 Olympic site where they went to the top of Holden Point viewing tower. For their final project students have been asked to design the Spectator Service Areas within the Olympic park. It is hoped the project with help students to build relationships with participating architects and put them in a good position to get involved in upcoming competitions.

One of the course’s students is even an Olympic hopeful in her own right. Elizabeth Gordon is a gymnast with ambitions to compete in 2012!
