Head of Animation to make film for ‘Dickens 2012′

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

LCC’s Head of Animation Tim Shore, has been commissioned by Film London to make one of three short films for ‘Dickens 2012‘, a global celebration of the life and work of Charles Dickens to mark his 200th birthday. The films will be screened during the Dickens on Film season at BFI Southbank, the largest ever film and TV retrospective dedicated to the Victorian author, and are expected to tour nationally and internationally.

Tim’s film – Fits and Starts of Restlessness – will be shot in Saffron Hill and Hatton Garden in Farringdon, and Smithfield, mainly at night. This was the site of a notorious 19th century ‘rookery’ where crime and vice flourished, and Fagin’s den in Oliver Twist. An animated sequence will use archive maps and sewer plans from the 1800s. The title is taken from Dickens’ essay Nightwalks: “it was always the case that London, as if in imitation of individual citizens belonging to it, had expiring fits and starts of restlessness.”

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

London College of Communication’s (LCC) Summer Shows 2011: Round About will be opening tonight for a private view and then to the public for one week from Friday 1 July.

The show, which is the final one to take place this summer, will be made up of work in design, animation and film produced by 500 LCC students graduating from various courses throughout the College.

Courses displaying at this year’s show will include one of the College’s biggest courses BA (Hons) Graphic & Media Design which is split into six pathways. Each pathway will be displaying students work in various areas around the college.

  • Illustration – Upper Street Gallery
  • Interactive Moving Image – Well Gallery
  • Design for Information – D105, D116
  • Design for Advertising – D109
  • Design for Typo – D111,D112. Work by students on this pathway can also be found on their exhibition website.
  • Print – Atrium Gallery

Stepping outside of LCC, the containers at the front of the College will be home to work by students on the BA Graphic Product Innovation course. Their work will be displayed  in a unique outdoor event which aims to promote both the work and the students of the course to potential employers. The course, which is a new addition to LCC, will also have  major projects by students from its first graduating year displayed in the Lower Street Gallery alongside work by FdA Graphic and Spatial Communication students.

Back inside more great work can be found with the BA/FdA Media Practice course being displayed inside the Podium Lecture Theatre.

Tucked away on the ground floor, the work by FdA/BA Design for Graphic Communication students can be found by following an innovative design (pictured above) by second year FdA student Nic Carter . He  uses a technique called anamorphic projection to draw guests down a long corridor to The Gallery where the exhibition can be found. The technique of anamorphic projection is used to project 2D images into a 3D space. The students have created their own exhibition website.

Print work by students on the ABC Dip 3D Modelling Animation and BA, FdA & ABC Dip Animation courses will be displayed in the Refectory and their animation videos will be screened in the Main Lecture Theatre.

Further away from the hustle and bustle, the 3rd Floor Galleries and Foundation Studios will be home to work by BA/FDA Games Design and BA/FDA Digital Media Design students. As well as the work that can be found throughout the show the BA Digital Media Design students have also set up a website dedicated to their designs.

We will be tweeting live tonight from the private view. Follow us on Twitter @lcclondon and #lccra

Animation students collaborate with the National Trust

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Students from BA (Hons) in Animation have made three short films for ‘Moving House’, a National Trust initiative inspired by the exceptional interior of Khadambi Asalache’s house at 575 Wandsworth Road.

Multi-award winning animator Lizzie Oxby led on the project and supported LCC students as they worked in groups to produce the films that respond to the house’s beautifully decorated sitting room, back bedroom and hallway.

The house was created by Khadambi Asalache, a Kenyan born poet, writer, architect, mathematician and civil servant who came to England in the 1960s. He bought his South London home in 1980 and lived there until his death in 2006.

Smile For London

Since the launch of initatives such as Platform For Art back in 2000 the London tube network has showcased some of the capital’s most exciting emerging artistic talent. What started as a distant rumbling is now a fully realised art movement and this is your chance to be part of it.

LCC Graphic & Media Design – Moving Image graduate Jo Kotas is putting the call out for submissions to be included in a new project - Smile for London. The goal is to bring the talent and creativity that makes London one of the culture capitals of the world to the travel weary masses on the London Underground. The aim is to inspire and remind us all of how great it is to be a Londoner.

For two weeks this October, Smile For London is taking over the CBSO platform screens on Monday mornings with a programme of film, video and animation to lift the mood and raise a smile. The work will also be exhibited in The Museum of London during same two week period.

For your chance feature in this exciting project, Jo is looking for imaginative responses to the following brief:

Create a twenty second piece of animation, moving image or film for the CBSO screens with the ultimate aim of inspiring, exciting or amusing Londoners as they make their way into work. You are encouraged to really push the boundaries whilst keeping the message positive and inoffensive. Take into consideration that there is no audio – so you should be able to draw an audience with visuals alone.

For inspiration visit http://www.cbsoutdoor-alive.co.uk/insight for an interesting survey on the psychology of the commuter.

The final day for submissions is 31st August 2010 and you are advised to upload your work  to smileforlondon.com as soon as possible. The sooner you upload, the more votes you’re likely to get.
