Commonplace: Student designed advice site

A new website that aims to give new and current students advice on preparing for university success has been designed by five students from the BA (Hons) Design for Graphic Communication course.

Working with project manager, Siobhan Clay, Commonplace has been designed by students Joe Hughes, Ella Mackinnon, Gosia Sikon, Alex Gregory and Anna Magombe.

The site aims to provide visitors with friendly, practical tips and advice on preparing for university success as well as advice on adapting to life in London and getting the most out of the big city.

The website provides a diverse range of information from tips on getting around London, student friendly recipes and advice from past students.

Talking about the students’ involvement in the project course director, Darren Raven, said: “I’m extremely proud to see students from the BA Design for Graphic Communication course working closely together sharing and applying research methods and design skills learnt during their time at LCC. They have really considered and developed a website that suits and works for its intended audience. I’m more than sure this will become a vital and valued resource for all UAL students.”

The name of the site is based on Commonplace books, 16th-18th Century scrap books where people recorded recipes, formulas and prose around a theme or interest. By calling it Commonplace students feel it embodies the concept of being a student focused, one-stop knowledge sharing shop on coming to and settling successfully at university.

The website is currently welcoming contributions from anyone who feels they can share tips on being a student in London. Contributions can be submitted via email to commonplace@arts.ac.uk.
