‘I’m a Leather Sofa – Get Me Out of Here!’ winners announced

1st Prize goes to Louis Vincent

Designs produced by second year FdA Surface Design students, Louis Vincent (pictured above), Matt Manson and Nafelli Tzanetou have been chosen by LCC staff and students to re-upholster the College’s leather sofas. While the industry expert vote – selected by Anne White, textile designer to Jean Munro – went to Gimlik-Quiroa.

The winners were announced by the Head of College, Professor Sandra Kemp, at a drinks reception held in the Workshop Block at LCC last week.

Nafelli Tzanetou comments, “I’m really thrilled to be part of this project. It’s a great opportunity for us as students to put our skills into action and see our designs materialise and become part of the very place in which we are building upon our future knowledge as designers.”

Here’s a sneak peek at the winning designs.

Matthew Manson

In second place and featured above is Matt Manson’s flocked wallpaper design. Matt says, ” the design was created after working in New York for the summer and just from sketches I took when I was living in Brooklyn. I wanted to crewated a classic wallpaper with a contempory twist.”

Design by Nafelli Tzanetou

Voted in third place was Nefelli Tzanetou’s ‘Clash of the Ages’ (pictured above). The design combines 1950′s and Greek Neoclassical Design. She comments, “I chose specific elements from the 50′s, such as the sugary sweet pastel colours and the curvaceous womanly forms. These elements were then placed amongst the grandeur of the Neoclassical pillars and heavily adorned and ornate architectural features to create a marriage between the two ages and styles.”

Designs by Gimlik-Quiroa

Pictured above is Maria Gimlik-Quiroa design selected by textile designer Anne White. Maria says, “Matt and I have often commented on how strong our class has become over the past two years and we discussed it again when we saw all our work exhibited, so receiving the industry vote was a very pleasant surprise as there was very stiff competition from my fellow students. Surface Design is definitely one LCC’s best-kept secrets so it’s great to see our course being given the chance to show the rest of the College what we do up here. I hope they like the new sofas!”

Congratulations to all the students involved, we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour on the College’s sofas in the future!
