The Limits of Design

Wednesday 11 of November 2009, Main Lecture Theatre, LCC
London College of Communication joined forces with the Saïd Business School (University of Oxford) to bring a timely and fascinating night of talks and discussion on ‘The Limits of Design’ to the Main Lecture Theatre at Elephant & Castle.
The Limits of Design kicked off with speakers Derek Miller and Lisa Rudnick from SNAP (Security Needs Assessment Protocol, UN Institute for Disarmament Research) presenting a global perspective through their paper ‘Trying it on for size: How does design fit into International Public Policy’?
This provocative and inspiring talk was then brought nearer to home by Dan Dickens from Southwark Circle, who presented Southwark Circles innovative membership organisation which provides on-demand help with life’s practical tasks through its community of neighbourhood helpers and a social network of teaching, learning and sharing.
Following a summary by Chair Lucy Kimbell, key elements of the presentations were then picked up by the panel – Jeff Masters from 2020 Public Service Trust at the RSA speaking on policy and design, Alison Prendiville at LCC providing an educational perspective on design curriculum and its appropriateness for these new dialogues and Joseph Harrington from Engine who contextualized the lectures from a design practice perspective.
The event ran on late into the night with challenging and relevant questions coming from the audience. A podcast will be available shortly.
